August 2024.
Hey everyone, welcome back to the Sound Scoop! I am ready for this week’s review, so let’s get it started!
This week I chose an artist who to me, sounds like a mix of Conan Grey meets Lorde meets Omar Apollo, all artists whose music has a unique sound in the best way possible.
If you like all the artists I mentioned previously, would will have no trouble discovering the music of Issac Dunbar.
He is a 21-year-old American singer-songwriter and producer who has been in the music scene since 19, so he has been in the public eye for some time. He’s explained this experience when interviewed by - on the best and worst of teenage stardom:
“The worst thing is people being able to publicly see you in your most cringiest years. And it’s documented. Forever. The best part is you feel cool, and that was so necessary for my hormonal messy self. “
He caught my eye (more like ears) as I was listening to my Spotify Discover Weekly, which first of all I recommend you all to use, it is an awesome music discovery method (but you could also wait every Tuesday for me!!). But specifically what I was interested in was his voice. It is soooo versatile, his voice can be both high and then super low.
Dunbar’s voice carries a strong emotional weight, which is evident in the way he delivers his lyrics. When singing on more serious topics like identity he presents a feeling of vulnerability and sincerity that resonates with listeners. But he can also be very sassy which I believe is difficult for artists to achieve and he does it so perfectly it even makes you giggle when hearing.
This week’s song choice “Take it Slow” is his recent single from the 5th of July. Not only have I had this song on repeat but I have been singing it in my head all day because it is very, super, insanely catchy. I attribute this to the distinct arrangement this song has.
There is a strong interplay between the lyrics and the instrumentals in the song. As it progresses, the tempo begins to speed up and more elements are added but as soon as he says “Can we take it slow”, the instrumental mirrors this and goes at a slower pace. When I first heard this, I was so impressed because this technique isn’t very common in modern music. I won’t spoil it all for when you hear the song on your own! He is truly not scared to experiment with sounds and I believe that this is what makes music so unique and true to each musical artist. Individuality is key to being special…
