November 2023.
Welcome back to the 3rd edition of Sound Scoop!
This week I chose a song from an album that I have had on repeat for some time. I’m talking about 21-year-old Canada-born Filipino artist GrentPerez and his album “When We Were Younger” released on June 2rd, 2023, specifically the sixth track, “Silver Lining”.
His musical upbringing began when he was 12 and posting YouTube videos from his bedroom where he accumulated a large fanbase. Fast forward to 2021, the year when he released his first EP “Demo(s) About Love” (highly recommend!!!) and he has been releasing many songs since then. You probably know him for his song “Cherry Wine” which as of today has been his biggest hit along with many others. I will say he is an artist to watch out for because his songs are very emotional but soothing.
If you read my review of “Joyride” by Adam Melchor you might like "Silver Lining” too because it is also about a bittersweet experience. Specifically, he sings about a romantic heartbreak, a lost love, and how it feels to be consumed by all the past memories, and how bitter it feels. But the sweet part about the song is that he is happy that the relationship happened and those memories serve as a reminder of how each other’s lives would be very different if they never encountered each other. In spite of regret, he finds comfort in being able to hold his lover close at one point in time.
One aspect of this song I will forever thank GrentPerez is the fact that it is over 3 minutes! This is because so many songs nowadays are so unnecessarily short but GrentPerez did not follow the trend thankfully.
The instrumental of this song fits the bossa nova spectrum but still maintains the modern pop feeling. His voice has a very calm tone that adds to the bittersweet message of the song. This song is just so good to listen to on any day at any time, it hits the spot always.
Favorite Verse
“Even if our stars don't end up aligning
There's a silver lining between
I'm just happy that I once held you close
Held you close to me”
I love love love this song and I hope this commentary and background on it will convince you to give it a listen. And while you do so give the "When We Were Younger” album a listen!
I’ll be back next Tuesday,
