November 2023.
Hi once again, thank you for reading this week’s review for Sound Scoop!
This time around I chose “California and Me” by the one and only Laufey (pronounced lay-vey). I chose her not only because she genuinely produces the most perfect jazz/classical music but also because she was recently nominated for her first Grammy Academy Award under Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
Laufey has been writing her songs since her first release in 2020. Ever since, many have said she has brought back to light the jazz genre, adding in her own “youthful” twist but still maintaining the authentic romantic sound. This has allowed her to become more popular and loved by the younger generations (including me!).
On September 3 of this year, she released her second album “Bewitched” from which this week’s song “California and Me” is featured. The interesting aspect of this song that caught my attention is that it is a collaboration with the Philharmonia Orchestra. And WOW the orchestra arrangement adds such beauty to Laufey’s voice and lyrics.
Laufey has no limit to her vocal versatility, California and Me I believe, is a perfect representation of what she can do(everything basically). The emotions and feelings she expresses are just so soothing to hear, expect this in every single one of her songs. None are misses.
Favorite Verse
“Left me and the ocean for your old flame
Holding back my tears, I couldn't make you stay
Can't quit this, so damn wicked to leave
California and me”
Let’s hope she wins her Grammy because she deserves it and many many more nominations in the future! Please check out her albums, you won’t regret it, not one second…
Check back in next Tuesday,
